Dubai Opera Photography Book by Assouline | Dany Eid
/Architecture is more than the creation of buildings. At its finest, it tells stories, preserves memories, and creates a connection between culture, people, and place.
In a city celebrated for its extraordinary skyline, Dubai Opera stands apart. Not for its height or scale, but for the way its architecture reflects the history and identity of Dubai.
Having my architectural photography featured in Dubai Opera: House of Cultures, published by Assouline, is a meaningful opportunity to share the visual story of one of Dubai's most distinctive cultural landmarks.
Inspired by Dubai's Maritime Heritage
Designed by Atkins, with Janus Rostock as lead architect, Dubai Opera draws inspiration from the traditional Arabian dhow, the wooden sailing vessel that played an important role in the city's maritime history.
Its sweeping curves, sculptural silhouette, and expansive glass façades reinterpret this heritage through contemporary architecture.
Rather than simply recreating a traditional vessel, the design captures its spirit, establishing a beautiful connection between Dubai's past and its modern cultural ambitions.
Where Architecture Meets Performance
Opened in 2016, Dubai Opera was conceived as a versatile cultural destination. Its remarkable auditorium can transform between a theatre, concert hall, and flat-floor event space, accommodating a wide variety of performances.
This adaptability makes the building more than an architectural landmark. It is a living cultural space where architecture and artistic expression come together.
Capturing Architecture Through Light and Form
As an architectural photographer, my interest goes beyond documenting a building's appearance. I look for the relationship between light and form, the rhythm of architectural lines, and the details that reveal the intention behind a design.
Dubai Opera offers an inspiring balance of fluid geometry, reflections, and carefully considered proportions.
Through my photography, I wanted to capture not only its distinctive architectural character, but also its relationship with the surrounding urban landscape.
For me, the most compelling architectural images are those that allow a building to tell its own story.
Dubai Opera: House of Cultures, Published by Assouline
I am delighted to see my photography featured in Dubai Opera: House of Cultures, a publication by Assouline celebrating one of Dubai's most significant cultural landmarks.
Contributing to this book has been a meaningful experience, bringing together my passion for architecture, photography, and visual storytelling.
Photography allows us to observe architecture beyond its physical presence, preserving fleeting moments of light, atmosphere, and perspective as part of a lasting visual record.
A Personal Note of Thanks
My sincere thanks to the entire Dubai Opera team, with special appreciation to Dana Ghazale and Karim Sleiman for their support, collaboration, and trust throughout this project.
I would also like to extend my gratitude to Rebecca Anne Proctor, the book's editor, for her thoughtful editorial contribution, and to the Assouline team for bringing this beautiful publication to life.
Dubai Opera is more than an architectural landmark. It is a place where heritage, culture, and contemporary architecture come together.
Through my lens, I hope to preserve not only its architectural beauty, but also the story and spirit that make it such an important part of Dubai's cultural identity.
