Nisi 150mm filter holder - Unboxing
/Filters offer creative control over reflections, exposure time and the balance of light within a landscape. Using them with an ultra-wide-angle lens, however, requires a system designed to fit the lens.
In this video, I introduce the NiSi S5 150mm filter holder, showing its construction and the way it combines rectangular filters with an integrated circular polariser.
A Filter System for Ultra-Wide-Angle Lenses
The S5 system featured in this 2017 post was offered in dedicated versions for the Nikon AF-S 14–24mm f/2.8G and Tamron SP 15–30mm f/2.8 lenses.
These lenses require a different approach from conventional screw-in filters. The S5 uses a lens-specific mounting assembly to support a larger filter holder in front of the lens.
Combining Filters in One System
The aluminium-alloy holder accommodates two rectangular filters measuring 150mm wide and 2mm thick, alongside an integrated circular polariser.
This arrangement allows photographers to combine different filter functions. A neutral-density filter reduces the amount of light reaching the camera, enabling longer exposures, while a graduated filter can help balance a brighter sky with a darker foreground.
The polariser provides additional control over reflections on suitable surfaces, including water and wet foliage.
Rotation and Polariser Adjustment
The holder rotates through 360 degrees, allowing graduated filters to be positioned to suit the composition.
An external adjustment wheel controls the integrated polariser, so its effect can be adjusted with the rectangular filters in place. The circular filter assembly can also be used without the front rectangular holder.
The system includes a quick-release mechanism for attaching and removing the holder.
