Sharjah Mosque: Aerial Architectural Photography
An aerial architectural photography series documenting the Sharjah Mosque (often called the Grand Mosque of Sharjah) in the United Arab Emirates. Shot from sunrise through blue hour and into the night, the series studies the mosque as both a monument and a piece of geometry: the central dome, the cascade of smaller domes, the patterned marble courtyards and the formal gardens that frame it.
The Sharjah Mosque is one of the most striking contemporary mosques in the UAE. Opened in 2019 at the initiative of His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Muhammad Al Qasimi, Ruler of Sharjah, it draws on classical Ottoman mosque architecture: a commanding central dome, supporting semi-domes, a rhythm of smaller domes, and two slender pencil minarets.
This series shows the building the way it is rarely seen, from directly above and from low oblique angles, revealing the planning behind the whole complex. The mosque sits on a strict axis, with the building, courtyards, gardens and reflecting pools all aligned along one line.
