Dany Eid is featured in “In Focus,” a Google Arts & Culture story published by the Dubai Culture & Arts Authority (Dubai Culture). The series introduces some of Dubai’s most creative and talented photographers, and Dany’s chapter tells his story through his own photographs and his own words.

Google Arts & Culture brings together the collections and stories of cultural institutions around the world. Dubai Culture’s stories on the platform cover Emirati heritage, Dubai’s nature sites and the city’s architectural landmarks. “In Focus – Dany Eid” sits among them as a portrait of the people who photograph the region.

What the collaboration shows

The story begins in Lebanon, where Dany was born, and follows him through an expatriate life in several Middle Eastern cities before he settled in Dubai more than a decade ago. It traces how the changing landscapes of the region, his love of travel and his longing for home shaped the way he sees.

It also covers his start. Dany had no formal training and began at a time when photography knowledge was hard to find. In 2014 he left his executive career to photograph full time. Today he earns his living from architectural photography and keeps landscape work as a personal passion, with pictures from the desert and from overland trips running through the story.

How he works

The story brings out a few beliefs that shape his work. Dany says preparation matters more than technical perfection, because technical problems are easier to fix in editing than a poorly planned shoot. He values the process, and the moments behind each picture, as much as the final image. Travelling overland to photograph is, in his words, a way to take a break from work and recharge.

It also covers his work with the industry, including his role as a Carl Zeiss ambassador and as an official photographer of Expo 2020 Dubai. He describes Dubai as a creative hub for photographers, thanks to its architecture and its mix of international talent and events.
